Switches and actuation

The SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) is sold with OmniPoint 2.0 switches, and that is the only switch option listed for it. The PCB is non-hotswappable, so the switches are fixed to the board. Whatever the board ships with is what you live with, and changing switch types later is not an easy option. If you want to experiment with different switches, look at the alternatives below.

The Wooting 80HE models are hotswappable and come with a long list of switch options: Lekker Linear 45 v2, Lekker Linear 60 v2, Lekker Tikken Light, Lekker Tikken Medium, Geon Raw HE and Wooting x TTC KOM. The Razer Huntsman V3 Pro TKL uses Razer Analog Optical switches and, like the Apex Pro, has a non-hotswappable PCB.

Key binds

The Fortnite layout is a fairly standard one. Crouch is on X, and jump and sprint stay on Space Bar and L-Shift. The harvesting tool is on 1 and the weapon slots follow along the number row, so the number keys get real use and a TKL layout covers it without any trouble.

The building binds are the interesting part. Wall, floor, stairs, roof and trap sit on Q, T, F, C and Z, with rotate on R and edit on G. They all cluster on the left side of the board, around the movement keys, which is a handy thing to copy if you are building a Fortnite setup of your own.

Should you buy ErycTriceps's keyboard?

The Apex Pro TKL (2023) suits anyone who wants a TKL layout, meaning the main block, arrow keys and navigation cluster without a numpad, and who is happy to use the switches the board ships with. Because the PCB is non-hotswappable, it is a better fit if you want to pick a board and stick with it than if you like to tinker. It also has RGB.

If you want to compare, there are three TKL options to look at:

The trade-off is mostly between a lower, more compact, hotswappable board (the Wooting models) and a board that matches the Apex Pro's height with a wider footprint but fixed switches (the Razer).
